ID Security - Data Release Overview
The Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education learned this week that personal information of students was inadvertently published on its website. The information was immediately removed from public view.
The data release involved nearly 6,000 high school seniors attending technology centers during the 2008-2009 school year. Students at 28 technology centers were affected. The information was posted in December 2011 on a sub-page of the CareerTech website, and 10 outside accesses have been identified since Feb. 29, 2012.
It appears the information was inadvertently placed in a public folder. The agency is continuing to look into how the information was published and will be implementing an extensive remediation plan to ensure student information is secure.
Individuals affected are being notified and offered credit monitoring services. The department is informing affected individuals of available information, and a toll-free information number to address concerns has been established. ODCTE also has advised the three major U.S. credit reporting agencies about this incident.
