16 Career Cluster Plans of Study and Workforce Stats

The cluster plans of study (POS) are templates that should be used by a school or consortium to encourage students to take appropriate course work to prepare for a career and advanced educational opportunities. These templates should be revised to reflect your school’s current course offerings as well as those at your local technology center and colleges. Select a “Career Cluster,” then scroll down to “Sample Cluster Plan of Study” or “Workforce Stats.”

A pathway is a sub grouping of related occupations and broad industries with a Career Cluster based on common knowledge and skills. Each cluster contains two – eleven career pathways. The ‘Key’ highlights a select group of occupations by educational level.

Students can create their own career plan while using this prepaid (free) Internet site. Junior high and high school students follow the menu to view career-planning steps, plans of study, the 16 Career Clusters, career knowledge and skills, occupational information, and more career information.

Career Poster/Poetry Contest

Involve your K-12 students with a career contest that is available every year. Mail the top three winners from each category, K-adult to the Guidance Division by the first Monday in December.

A career practicum is a planned program of work-site learning experiences relevant to a student’s chosen career major or plan of study. A career practicum is coordinated with the student’s academic or school-based preparation.
A maximum of two units earned may be granted for a career practicum and applied toward high school graduation requirements. One unit may be granted when: (1) all of the following criteria are met, and (2) the student is involved in a work-site learning experience an average of 10 hours per week, or at least 300 hours, during the school year. Units may be earned and granted in an accredited high school summer program.

David Stevens Climbing Wall - Reassess the 'Career Ladder' concept
The career ladder concept should be withdrawn from use in many traditional venues. This image of a single vertical ascent path with stable steps to advance toward a single clear goal is often irrelevant today. It should be replaced with the metaphor of a climbing wall.
