Diabetics Legislation
A couple of years ago, the state passed new legislation on Diabetics management in schools. (
See SDE memo attached that went to comprehensive schools.) I have had a few questions over it and thought I would send a brief overview. Staff at ODCTE have reviewed the Diabetes Management Legislation. At this time their recommendations include having a local Technology Center board agenda item approved to accept the diabetes management plans from the partner districts. The technology center would then follow all of the guidelines listed for the student in their management plan. This process would be much like the IEP process for students with special needs. The responsibility for developing the plan and maintaining the plan is with our partner schools.
However, when ever possible involvement of the technology center staff in developing the plan or reviewing the plan would provide insight into the environment that the student will be exposed to at the technology center. (For example, a student in a career major with a high level of physical activity like construction or welding, would affect the student's insulin need differently than a high school class that has a low level of physical activity). If you have an adult student with diabetics, we recommend you develop a 504 plan for him/her. If you need further information, b
