A 1: What is WorkKeys® ?
Designed by ACT ® , the company that developed the ACT assessment college entrance exam, WorkKeys measures workplace literacy. With a database of more than 18,000 job profiles, ACT’s Work Ready System known as the WorkKeys System identifies skills needed on the job, assesses an individual's skill level, and helps identify training needed to close any gaps.

The WorkKeys job profiling service offers a concrete way for businesses to analyze the skills needed for specific jobs and to describe those needs to educators, students, and job applicants. By comparing job profile information with individuals' scores on the WorkKeys assessments, businesses have a tool for making reliable decisions about hiring, training, and program development.

If you are interested in WorkKeys job profiling, contact your local Technology Center Business and Industry Director and/or an ACT Authorized WorkKeys Job Profiler. They can visit with you about the process of profiling and tell you about possible funding options.
A 4: Why use ACT ’s Work Ready System?
Over the past 10 years, ACT’s WorkKeys System has become a widely accepted common language for skills definition among employers, educators/trainers, and potential/incumbent employees. The strength of the WorkKeys System comes from its:
• Objectivity--skill levels are easily and universally understood, unlike school grades.
• Simplicity--skill levels are described in terms of single-digit numbers with clearly defined meanings.
• Compliance with federal law (ADA, EEOC).
• Legal defensibility.
A 5: What are the core areas or skills being assessed, and why those particular skills?
The following WorkKeys assessments are used:
• Reading for Information--measures the skills used when people read and use written text to do a job. Texts include memos, letters, directions, signs, notices, bulletins, policies, and regulations.
• Locating Information--measures the skills people use when they work with workplace graphics such as charts, graphs, tables, forms, flowcharts, diagrams, floor plans, maps, and instrument gauges.
• Applied Mathematics--measures skills used when applying mathematical reasoning and problem-solving techniques to work-related problems.
Of the thousands of jobs profiled nationally using WorkKeys , about 80 percent of them use these three core areas.
A 6: What is an Oklahoma Career Readiness Certificate?
An Oklahoma Career Readiness Certificate (OKCRC) is a portable credential that shows an individual has certain fundamental skills needed in the workplace. The WorkKeys assessment system is used to determine those skill levels. Depending on their scores, potential or incumbent employees receive one of the following certificates:
• Platinum--awarded to those who score at or above a level 6 in each of the core areas
• Gold--awarded to those who score at or above a level 5 in each of the core areas.
• Silver--awarded to those who score at or above a 4 in each of the core areas.
• Bronze--awarded to those who score at or above a 3 in each of the core areas.
Certificates come in two different formats--an 8 by 11.5 inch certificate signed by the governor and a wallet-sized version.
A 7: Can an employer use the CRC exclusively and no other tools to hire for their company?
If the employer has had his company's specific job position profiled the answer is yes. It is highly recommended to use as a tool in the hiring process in combination with the application, job interview, background check, resumes and other hiring tools. The job profiling component of the WorkKeys system is designed so that, when appropriately used, WorkKeys assessments will be job-related and meet the validity and fairness requirements described in the federal government's Uniform Guidelines on Employee Selection Procedures (1978) and enforced by the EEOC. If the employer is using an occupational profile not specific to their company, the answer is no.
A8: What type of skill upgrade training is available for the WorkKeys ® assessments?
Skills upgrade training is available using ACT approved curriculum, CR 101. Many Technology Centers, schools and Workforce offices offer access to CR 101 for skills upgrade. CR101 includes curriculum for the foundational WorkKeys skills, soft skills such as customer service and work habits, and vital life-skills such as financial literacy, career exploration, resume writing and interviewing skills.
