SPA Day! The OkACTE Guidance Division Executive Committee has planned a SPA (Self Positive Awareness) day for you! Please mark March 30, 2012 on your calendar. We will be at the S. Penn Campus of Moore Norman Technology Center and our speaker will be Ron Willis, mental health consultant and President of Green Porch Swing Production. His most meaningful education occurred while sitting on an old green porch swing, on summer evenings, with his grandfather, a retired railroad engineer. "My grandfather always believed that in the business of helping people, what you have living in your heart is infinitely more valuable than a diploma to be hung on the wall." Ron's philosophy is a simple one:
"We become better professionals, business persons, spouses and parents in only one predictable way: WE MUST BECOME BETTER PEOPLE! Anything less is simply a collection of feeble techniques and strategies; doomed to fail when the going gets rough."
This is a benefit for OkACTE Guidance membership. This will be a free workshop for primary and secondary OkACTE Guidance members. Non-members are welcome to come but there will be a $25 registration fee. Registration and more detailed information will follow after the holidays.

ODCTE New Website:
You probably have noticed, we have a new website! We are all still learning how it works (!) but to find most of our stuff - click on "Educators" at the top and then click on "Career and Academic Connections" on the left. You should see some pages that look familiar.
My Next Move is an interactive tool for job seekers and students to learn more about their career options. The site has tasks, skills, salary information, and more for over 900 different careers. Users can find careers through keyword search; by browsing industries that employ different types of workers; or through the O*NET Interest Profiler, a tool that offers personalized career suggestions based on a person's interests and level of work experience. One of the things I discovered while looking at this site, is that you can download paper copies of the assessments-these are some of the same assessments found on OKCIS. These could be helpful when you do not have access to computers (or internet) with your students. They can do the paper and pencil assessments and then use their results and jump on OKCIS at a later time to further their career exploration. Website is: www.mynextmove.org/ and to get to the paper copies of the assessments, click on "help" in the lower left hand corner; then click on "about this site"; then go to the bottom of the page and click on " O*NET Interest Profiler Short Form page" Directions and other materials are there for downloading.
Reminder: Counselor Conference on March 5, 2012 at Magnuson (formerly Clarion) in Oklahoma City. More details to follow after the holidays.
