Degree in Education

Teachers must have a minimum of two year's work experience in a clinical setting within the last five years prior to your first teaching experience.

No additional requirements needed if teaching in a comprehensive high school.

Professional healthcare credential related to the area of instruction required if teaching in a technology center.
- Complete and pass the appropriate exam administered by the Certification Examinations for Oklahoma Educators.
- Upon review of official college transcript, a plan-of-study will be determined by a representative of an accredited university and occupational division staff of the Oklahoma Department of CareerTech Education.
- Additional credit hours may be needed to obtain a CareerTech Health Careers Education certification. These hours must be completed, upon request of state program administrator, in order to teach within a CareerTech funded program.
Non-Degreed with Industry Experience and/or Certifications
or Degreed in a Field other than Education, with Industry Experience and/or Certifications
It is the intention of the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education that each CareerTech teacher hold a standard teaching certificate. Teachers whom do not hold a bachelors degree nor a standard teaching certificate may teach with a Provisional Level I, Provisional Level II Certificate or Alternative Teaching Certificate. However, they will be required to work toward degree and/or standard teaching certificate completion.
The following Provisional Level I requirements apply to teachers whom are non-degreed but degree/certification seeking:
Provisional Level I Certificate:
- The applicant for this certificate must provide evidence of earning a high school diploma or successful completion of the G.E.D.
- The applicant must provide evidence of completing three (3) years of appropriate experience in the field to be taught, within five [5] years preceding initial certification.
- The issuance of this certificate must be requested and signed by the employing superintendent.
- The applicant must receive a recommendation for the Provisional Level I Certificate from the state program administrator as well as develop a plan of study with an advisor from an accredited institution which offers a Career and Technology Education degree, which indicates advancement toward a Provisional Level II and a standard certificate.
- The Provisional Level I Certificate has a one-year (1) term of validity.
- In order to renew a Provisional Level I, a teacher must take six (6) hours within the first two (2) years of their employment. All coursework must be transcripted by June 30.
- Provisional Level I Certificates may be successively reissued upon satisfactory completion of not less than six (6) semester hours of credit toward standard certification including the basic 14/15 courses during the one year term of validity. A request by the employing superintendent, a recommendation from the state program administrator, and an official transcript from the institution of higher education with which the applicant has filed a plan of study, must accompany the application.
- All Provisional Level I requirements should be completed within five years.

- The applicant for this program must have earned a baccalaureate degree in a field of study that corresponds to an area of Oklahoma certification for a Secondary Certification or a Career Technology education Certificate.
- The applicant shall provide evidence of having three (3) years of appropriate trade experience in the field to be taught.
- Upon review of official college transcript, a plan-of-study will be determined by a representative of an accredited university and occupational division staff of the Oklahoma Department of CareerTech Education.
- Additional credit hours may be needed to obtain a CareerTech Standard certification.

The following Alternative Certification requirements apply to teachers whom are degreed but certification seeking:
Alternative Placement Program
Anyone denied admittance to an approved teacher education program or enrolled in and subsequently failed required teacher education courses necessary to meet the minimum requirements of a teacher education program is not eligible for the Oklahoma Alternative Placement Program.
The Alternative Placement Program is administered through the Oklahoma State Department of Education.
