New
CareerTech Board Appointed

Governor Brad Henry has made
appointments to the new State Board of Career and Technology Education
created by legislation approved
this past
spring.
“We are pleased with
the appointments made to the board,” said Phil
Berkenbile, CareerTech interim state director. “The appointed members
all come from business and industry and I look forward to working with them
as we move
the CareerTech system forward.”
Berkenbile
said the requirements to serve on the CareerTech State
Board according to legislation include having first hand
knowledge
about the CareerTech system. “Board members must be
an owner or business executive having the authority to hire
or make policy for their company located in Oklahoma or a
significant number of their workforce has been trained or
educated in the career and technology system,”he said. “Also
board members must have a high school diploma or its equivalency.”
Members
are appointed by the governor and confirmed by State Senate, and are
subject to the orientation and continuing education requirements
for
school
board members. |

For A New State Director
Advertising
for the State Director position began Oct. 7 with
the posting of the job announcement on the CareerTech
Website. Chairperson of the Board Sandy Garrett finalized
the job description with the input of the board.
Applications are due in Superintendent Garrett's
office, either by mail or hand delivered, no later
than 4 p.m. Dec. 1.

The state’s
CareerTech nine-member board is comprised of State Superintendent of
Public Instruction
Sandy Garrett who serves
as the chairperson of the board.
Two members of the State Board of Education are also appointed to the
board along with a representative of each congressional district and
one member
at large.
Interim State Director of
Career and Technology Education Phil Berkenbile serves as an ex-officio,
non-voting member and executive
officer of the
board.

Harold Anglin, Pryor,
has been appointed as the member at large for the CareerTech board.
Anglin is a retired CareerTech educator and administrator. During
a span of 27 years he has been highly involved in technology education
in both Oklahoma and Kansas. |

Sue Arnn,
Ardmore, is the second member of the State Board of Education appointed
to the CareerTech board. Arnn has served on numerous boards of
nonprofit organizations, including the Oklahoma State School Boards
Association Board of Directors. |

Debbie Blue, Shawnee,
is a member of the State Board of Education also appointed to the
CareerTech board. Blue has taught in the Sapulpa, Jenks, and Shawnee
school systems and is currently the Dean of the College of Arts
and Sciences at Oklahoma Baptist University. |

Cheri Ezzell, Enid, has
been newly appointed to the board as the representative for Congressional
District 3. Ezzell is the executive director of Community Development
Support Association, Inc. in Enid. |

Randy Gilbert, Tecumseh,
has been appointed to the CareerTech board as the representative
for Congressional District 5. Gilbert is a former agriculture education
instructor, and is currently operations manager of Gilbert and
Sons Trucking, in Tecumseh. |

Melvin Gilliam, Tulsa,
has been newly appointed to the CareerTech board as the representative
for Congressional District 1. Gilliam is the vice president and
director of community reinvestment of MidFirst Bank. |

Karl Meyers, Ft. Gibson,
has been newly appointed to the CareerTech board as the representative
for Congressional District 2. Meyers is the operating vice president
of the Muskogee Mill for Georgia Pacific. |

Gen. Toney Stricklin,
Lawton-Ft.Sill, has been appointed to the CareerTech board as the
representative for Congressional District 4. Stricklin is the vice
president of business development for TELOS-OK, a well-established
and respected software development firm in Lawton-Ft. Sill. |
