"Foster Grandparent” Melvin Johnson Receives Award

FORT COBB – A phone call led Melvin Johnson (Fort Cobb) to become a foster grandparent in September 2001. And the children have kept him coming back to the Caddo Kiowa Child Developmental Center for nearly three years.

"The Foster Grandparent Program is a win-win situation for everyone," said Vicki Rexroat, CKTC’s Child Development Coordinator. “This gives our children an excellent opportunity to build a relationship with a grandparent-figure. Many of our children either do not have grandparents, or may not see them on a regular basis. So the children are happy, the parents are happy, we are happy, and the volunteers are happy.”

Johnson is one of eight foster grandparents in the center who dedicate between 25 and 30 hours weekly to the children in the center. Recently he was recognized at the Oklahoma Foster Grandparent Awards Program in Oklahoma City with the Oklahoma Grandparent Volunteer of the Year Award.

Caddo Kiowa Technology Center’s campus is located in Fort Cobb, Oklahoma. Additional information about programs and services available at CKTC can be found at www.caddokiowa.com.
