The charter class of Oklahoma CareerTech’s Business
and Industry Services - University (BIS-U), that launched last February
graduated on Nov. 2.
The program was developed by the Oklahoma Department of CareerTech to
provide high-quality learning opportunities and to develop the talent
the system needs to thrive in an increasingly competitive market, according
to Justin Smedley director of economic development at the state CareerTech
agency.
| “Last year the state’s
CareerTech BIS and adult, career development programs provided
services and training through more than 360,000 enrollments,” Smedley
said. “This includes customized programs and services for
new companies locating in Oklahoma, existing companies, small businesses
working to expand and entrepreneurs just getting started. Often
these programs and services are a main incentive for companies
to locate in Oklahoma. “Leadership development and succession is increasingly
important to our system’s success and growth,” Smedley
said.
The class for this new professional development program
was selected from new, current, or potential Business and Industry
Services directors and coordinators who have at least three years
experience at a technology center. |

“BIS-U focuses on five core areas that are essential
for all BIS directors,” Smedely said. “These areas include
school administration, program administration, BIS director’s role,
management and leadership, and economic development. The program also
includes an important 10-month mentorship component.”
