GM Scholarship Expands Opportunity

By Virginia Thomas
Southwest Technology Center

A 2006 graduate of the automotive technology program, Michael Powers is working toward a degree at Oklahoma City Community College and at the same time working in the Wilmes Superstore service center where he earns a stipend while gaining on-the-job training.

At the end of two years he will have earned an associate’s degree and Automotive Service Excellence certification, all funded through a General Motors scholarship.

A graduate of Altus High School with a 3.9 grade point average, Powers was an outstanding student during his training at SWTC, according to William Mize, instructor.

Powers said that the training at the technology center gave him a good basis of general knowledge that has served him well both in his college work and on-the-job training.

Through a General Motors scholarship, Altus High School honor graduate Michael Powers works at the Wilmes Superstore service department and while going to college at Okclahoma City Community College where he is working toward an associate’s degree.
