Rhonda Heavener's second grade class at Kansas Elementary School visited the Scratch Patch Hospital at Northeast Technology Center's East Campus near Kansas, Oklahoma. They experienced the hospital simulation and were "admitted," had lab work done, an EKG and x-ray. Then they went into pre-op for gowning and an IV, surgery, post-op, and finally paying their bill with play money.

The tech students serve as parents, nurses, specialists, surgeons and administrative personnel, and perform their roles with seriousness to better give the children the feel for how a hospital visit would really be.

The premise for the simulation is that children often have to go into the hospital with injuries and that experience can be frightening for them. If they can be shown what a hospital visit would be like -- the people they would meet and the things they would see -- it might take some of the fear out of it. It might also plant a seed early on that could grow into a desire to work in the health care field later on.

From all reports, the nineteen children "had a ball" pretending to have various injuries and ailments and had fun getting bandaged up and learning about the procedures they would experience if they had to go to the hospital.
