CareerTech Teachers “Building Wealth”

Two Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education marketing education instructors are part of an elite group of teachers who will pilot a new program called Building Wealth. The program teaches investment education to high school students.

Sue Lyn Glidden, Jenks High School, and Jenni Johnson, Tri County Technology Center, Bartlesville, are two of only 25 teachers in the U.S. and Canada selected for this pilot program. Glidden and Johnson are also DECA chapter advisers, the CareerTech student organization affiliated with marketing education.

The National Association of Investors Corporation, the New York Stock Exchange Foundation and DECA are project sponsors.

“Building Wealth teaches students how to maximize the ‘time value’ of money and, in the face of today’s culture of consumption, provide them with the knowledge and tools to lay a foundation for a lifetime of informed saving and investing,” said Ed Davis, executive director of DECA.

 Glidden, Johnson and their fellow marketing teachers recently completed training for the Building Wealth project in New York City. Project sponsors conducted the 15-hour training. The two-day course focused on the principles of investing strategies for integrating the Building Wealth curriculum into the marketing classroom.

“This is an honor both for me and for Jenks High School,” Glidden said.  “The training and support that we are getting, through the Building Wealth project, is incredible. Not only does it add a tremendously valuable lesson to my marketing class, it also brings excitement and dimension to classroom learning.”

Glidden and Johnson are scheduled to launch their semester-long investment course,  Building Wealth, in the spring semester. The course will cover the importance of lifetime personal financial literacy and foster a realistic understanding of investment strategies and how to apply them. Classroom learning will be measured through DECA’s competitive events program and local partnerships with NAIC clubs.

“Young people are uniquely positioned to benefit from long-term investing,” said Robin Counce, Oklahoma DECA state adviser/marketing education program specialist.  “That’s why we are so excited about bringing DECA’s Building Wealth project into our marketing education classes, and to have Sue and Jenni selected as original participants.”
