Paul Mayer’s Career Is Off To The Races

By Debra Scroggins
Mid-America Technology Center

Paul Maer with his horseMid-America Horse Production and Management instructors Steve Nicklas and Lyn Schuerman earn kudos for connecting a former student Paul Mayer with Calumet Farm Manager Bill Witman. This move is launching him into what could become a prestigious career as Brood Mare Manager at Calumet Farm in Lexington, Kentucky.

Calumet Farm has a history of Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown winners known worldwide.

Witman, being familiar with the Horse Production program at Mid-America Technology Center contacted the instructors regarding employment of a former student who might qualify for the position of Brood Mare Manager Trainee. Nicklas and Schuerman knew Witman as owner/manager of Ridgeleigh Farms in Purcell and later as manager of the Lazy E Ranch in Guthrie, OK.

The instructors thought of Mayer, who at the time was a senior at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. They shared with him about the possibility of this position in Kentucky, and Mayer then faxed his resume to Calumet Farm. After receiving his resume and several phone conversations later, he was invited to Lexington, KY for an interview at Calumet Farm. Mayer drove to Lexington for his January 3rd interview and was hired the following day as Brood Mare Manager Trainee of Calumet Farm. He began work on January 15.
