Alzheimer’s Association
http://www.alz.org/
This organization is mentioned on the HOSA Handbook as an organization that
could be contacted for community service projects.
Oklahoma Quiltworks
http://www.okquiltworks.com/ics.shtml
Oklahoma Quiltworks in OKC volunteers make quilts for the Infant Crisis Center.
They need supplies to be donated. Go to the website, click on Infant Crisis
Center and see how your HOSA chapter could get involved. Wouldn’t a blanket or
quilt made out of fabric that reminded people of health be neat? (hearts,
band-aids…looking for fabric or embroidering a health-related symbol?).
Heifer Foundation
http://www.heifer.org/site/pp.aspx?c=edJRKQNiFiG&b=204586
This website offers an opportunity to purchase farm animals for third world
families which will make a difference in providing that family with a way raise
money and live.
Habitat for Humanity
http://www.habitat.org/getinv/
How about “the House that HOSA helped build”. This site provides information
about Habitat for Humanity and ways that people can get involved to help,
donating, finding a local project and helping….
Heifer Foundation
http://www.readtofeed.org/for_kids/animal_gifts/
HOSA members could use this site to present this idea to elementary age children
to get children involved with Heifer International. It has pictures of animals
to download for the children to color. This may provide a way to make a
presentation to groups and get the group interested in an organization that does
so much good. There are stories about real families who have received the
animals describing what a difference the animal made in their lives.
Child Share a part of Circle of Care
http://www.circleofcare.org/
Check out Child Share on this website. (go to COMMUNITY RESOURCES, click on
Child Share). Child Share offers support to foster parents to children from the
Department of Human Services…have a “shower” for Child Share and invite a
speaker to talk about the program, get a list of the most needed items, bring
presents and have cake and punch! Don’t forget a camera to take pictures. This
organization helps the helpers! (Oklahoma City and Tulsa).
Oprah’s Angel Network
http://www.oprah.com/uyl/oan_landing.jhtml
This is the Angel Network site, with many projects and ways to help communities
in the US and Internationally.
Additional Ideas can be found in Unit 7, “Making a
Difference” in HOSA Learn Grow Become, this is available from CIMC. This
has excellent worksheets for HOSA members to use to identify community
projects.
Section C of the HOSA Handbook has ideas for Community
Projects
Local Girl Scout leaders (always looking for ideas for
meetings) would welcome presentations on health-related issues.
Look in your communities for craft stores that may be
involved in community outreach and join the effort.
Homeless shelters would welcome volunteers. Some
possibilities to offer would be to organize a drive for toiletries in small
sizes or help with serving a meal.
HOSA members could offer assistance to churches,
synagogues, mosques that provide outreach services or have a need for
health-related information.
