MISSION
The mission of HOSA is to enhance the delivery of compassionate, quality
health care by providing opportunities for knowledge, skill, and leadership
development of all health occupations education students, thus helping the
students meet the needs of the health care community
MEMBERSHIP
HOSA has more than 87,700 members in approximately 2,640 chartered chapters
in 38 state associations, including the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto
Rico.
Oklahoma has a membership of over 4,490, including secondary, postsecondary,
collegiate students; professional members; and alumni members.
HOSA plays an important role in HCE
programs and links them to the health industry. Members of HOSA chapters
include secondary, postsecondary, and collegiate students enrolled in HCE
classes. Alumni and professional members are former active HOSA members who
have remained in good standing with the chapter or persons who are associated
with or who have participated in the development of HCE students in a state as
approved by the state association. Honorary Life Members are individuals who
have made contributions to the development of HOSA in a state and whose
membership has been approved by the state executive council. The state
executive council is made up of student officers that represent all regions of
the state.
HOSA is the only vocational student organization designed to exclusively
serve the needs of students in health occupations programs. HOSA is for and
led by students.
HOSA is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health
Occupations Division of the American Vocational Association as an integral
part of health occupations education via an official policy statement.
Academic and vocational skills must be blended together within the
instructional delivery system to provide realistic reflections of how these
skills are used with our world.
HOSA promotes and develops a respect among students, teachers and the
citizens of the community for health occupations education.
HOSA's state and national leadership conference and competitive events
program are included in the list of approved activities of the Oklahoma and
National Association of Secondary School Principals.
HOSA provides opportunities for students enrolled in health occupations
education programs to sharpen their occupational skills while developing
valuable leadership, decision-making, and employment skills. Individuals must
actively participate in the teaching process for true learning to take place,
and there must be a method to support pathways of success for all learners.
All individuals in an educational development setting should be held to high
expectations and should have a plan to reach their highest potential.
HOSA members learn to appreciate their ability to help people who need
health care and develop a better understanding of health-related issues.
Getting involved in health issues is central to HOSA.
HOSA encourages skill development and a healthy competitive spirit through
participation in the national competitive events and recognition program.
Individuals and the educational system must have benchmarks to measure against
to ensure that they are progressing positively towards long-term goals and
objectives.
HOSA promotes fellowship through social and recreational activities.
HOSA actively involves members in school, community, state and national
activities, providing members with the opportunity to travel, meet new people,
and share ideas. HOSA provides students with exposure to the world in which
their goals and plans are based upon to modify, with obtained information,
their individual development.
