  Introduction

Representatives from nursing education and nursing service organized the Oklahoma Nursing Articulation Consortium (ONAC) in 1998.  The goal of ONAC was to establish a process that would facilitate the articulation of licensed practical nurses through an associate degree nursing program and/or a baccalaureate nursing program.   In 1999, funding was obtained from the Helene Fuld Trust to fund two nurse educators to develop a seamless articulation model for nursing education in Oklahoma..  At the end of the grant period in December 2001, a curricular grid containing nursing concepts and competencies at each level of nursing education will be completed along with a plan for implementation of the model.

Our Mission

The purpose of this grant is to develop a seamless articulation model that will provide a consistent method in Oklahoma for awarding credit to licensed practical nurses who want to earn an associated degree or a baccalaureate degree in nursing.  The curriculum model will recognize adult education principles, which suggest that learning built on previous experience is essential for adult learners.

Summary of Grant

A group of Oklahoma nurse educators began meeting in June 1998 to discuss ways to facilitate the articulation of licensed practical nurses through a baccalaureate-nursing program.  Initially, the goal was to find ways to facilitate the process, but later the discussion moved to curricular issues common to each program.  At this point the group realized there was a need to align the curriculum of the various levels of nursing education so those students would not have to repeat learned materials.  The Oklahoma Board of Regents of Higher Education, the Oklahoma Department of Vocational and Technical Education, and the Oklahoma Board of Nursing encouraged further pursuit of the initiative.

The Oklahoma Nursing Articulation Consortium (ONAC) was formed to develop a process that would change the paradigm of nursing education throughout the state of Oklahoma. The membership of ONAC was expanded to include representatives from associate degree and baccalaureate nursing programs along with representatives from the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education, the Oklahoma Board of Regents for Higher Education and nursing service.  In October 1999 a grant was submitted to the Helene Fuld Trust for funding to support the development of a seamless articulation model for nursing education in Oklahoma.  The grant was approved and work began on the Helene Fuld Educational Mobility grant in January 2000.  The grant period extends until December 31, 2001. The  Helene Fuld Educational Mobility Grant was renewed for another two years from September 1, 2002 through September 1, 2004. This allowed the initiation of pilot sites for the developed model.

The funded project is now complete in September 2004 and the committee continues to work on the articulation models and articles that will highlight the success of the grant.
