The 445-mile waterway links Oklahoma and the surrounding five-state ports beyond by way area with ports on the Missouri, Ohio, Illinois, and Mississippi river systems, and foreign and domestic of New Orleans and the Gulf Intercostal Waterway.

The training facility at 5301 West Channel Road, will be staffed and coordinated by Tulsa Tech and serve over 50 industries and 2,500 employees now located at the 2,000-acre Port, as well as the many industries located in the nearby vicinity. Rogers State University will grant college credit through an articulation agreement with Tulsa Tech. Manufacturing Technology courses will be structured around Quality, Safety or Production and may be applied toward an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Applied Technology.

A 1997 study by the Port Authority showed a need for on-premise training, according to Port Director Bob Portiss.

"The partnership that is being forged between the Tulsa Port of Catoosa, Tulsa Technology Center and Rogers State University fulfills a need that has long existed, according to a survey of Port industries, and will help make the Port more marketable to site selectors who may be considering bringing new industries and employment opportunities to Northeastern Oklahoma. Providing on-premise training for Port industries is critically important to the future development of the Port," said Portiss.

Survey results indicated the top five training needs included; supervisor training, quality control, basic computer skills training, and safety orientation, as well as ISO 9000 and QS 9000 training.

Tulsa Technology Center is well prepared to meet the demand for such industry-specific training according to Tulsa Tech Superintendent Gene Callahan.

"We are pleased to be a part of such a unique venture that will showcase our commitment to being an economic development partner while serving the training needs of industry," said Callahan.
