Shelbi Barrett – HOSA – Durant High School
THEN: Interested in health care from a young age, with older siblings involved in HOSA. She signed up for the health sciences program at Durant High School and became an officer in her local HOSA chapter. At the national conference she competed in sports medicine, and even had the opportunity to hear from featured speaker Ben Carson, now a presidential hopeful. Through HOSA and health sciences, Shelbi:
- Became a certified clinical medical assistant.
- Learned basic human anatomy, basic medical terminology, sports medicine, basic pathologies, and venipuncture.
- Learned through competitive events the level of commitment it would take to be a member of a health care team.
NOW: A second-semester nursing student at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, enrolled in the BSN program. Shelbi says she uses what she learned through HOSA and health sciences almost daily during nursing school. She plans to finish her degree at OUHSC and then attend an acute care nurse practitioner program.
“CareerTech gave me a leg up in nursing school because I had already learned most of the basic information by the time I got there,” Shelbi said.
