First-year high school counselors learn at workshop

New school counselors learned from current school counselors and state agencies at the third annual First-Year High School Counselor Workshop in late August. The Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education partnered with the Oklahoma State Department of Education and the Oklahoma Regents for Higher Education to offer the workshop.

Participants heard important information from each agency that they will need as they head into their first year as school counselors. They also learned some best practices from current high school counselors, several of whom had attended the workshop last year.

Each participant also received a new counselor binder with needed resources to help them advise their students and parents on important career and academic decisions.

Continuing Teacher Academy set for Sept. 14

The registration deadline is quickly approaching for the Continuing Teacher Academy. These sessions are designed for both new and experienced teachers, coordinators and trainers looking for strategies in classroom management, student engagement, cooperative learning, the latest information for CTSOs, learning styles and more.

Registration is $30 for the day, which includes a continental breakfast and lunch. New teachers are strongly encouraged to attend, but all teachers are welcome to join the session Sept. 14 at Moore Norman Technology Center’s South Penn Campus. The registration deadline is Sept. 9. We look forward to sharing best practices in education.

Please note that ODCTE divisions responsible for teacher training have concentrated their professional development into these dates and aren’t planning to offer additional days.

Employability skills highlighted in new resources

Employability skills are highlighted in new resources from the Curriculum and Instructional Materials Center and the CareerTech Testing Center, both divisions of Oklahoma CareerTech.

CIMC now has a web page that draws attention to available employability resources. This page includes product samples and direct links to those products in the new online CIMC catalog. Check out these resources at http://www.okcareertech.org/educators/cimc/employability-resources.

In addition, the CareerTech Testing Center has new assessments and a study guide on employability skills. Two new assessments address workplace readiness skills and job-seeking and retention skills. The free study guide covers both topics. To get a glimpse of what the new assessments cover, access the study guide at http://www.okcareertech.org/educators/assessments-and-testing/testing/study-guides.
