Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

It is hard to believe 2013 is almost over. The year went by very fast. Moving to Oklahoma and getting to know the great folks in CareerTech, the legislature, the governor’s office and the business community has been a whirlwind of activity and learning. Oklahoma has the potential to bring CareerTech to a whole new level of performance. The strong programs and great people working in the system make progress possible.

To the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education team, a special thank you for your dedication this year. You are an amazing group of people with talent and commitment to the cause. It is a pleasure and a privilege to be able to work with you on advancing CareerTech.

Merry Christmas to all and may 2014 be a happy, prosperous, wondrous experience for you and your family.

Changes continue in workplace expectations

What is required to be productively engaged in the economy is getting more intense. A regular academic high school diploma no longer meets the requirements of most living wage jobs. Recent projections show significant increases in CareerTech-related workplace requirements.

These projections are essential to planning one's future education and career goals. For instance, in 2012 approximately one-third of all jobs in the U.S. required some form of postsecondary education, including CareerTech credentials and college degrees. Yet between 2012 and 2022, close to two-thirds of the occupations projected to grow the fastest will require some form of postsecondary education. Moreover, occupations typically requiring apprenticeships are expected to grow by over 22 percent. http://www.bls.gov/news.release/ecopro.nr0.htm

A conversation with Nick Pinchuk hosted by governor

The Oklahoma Business Roundtable and the governor are hosting a conversation with Nick Pinchuk, CEO, Snap-on Inc. The conversation will be how business can better engage with education, particularly CareerTech, to assure all Oklahomans are economically productive. The event is by invitation only and reservations are required. If you are interested in attending, contact a tech center superintendent. The event will be January 23 at the Skirvin Hotel in Oklahoma City.

Metro Tech named as a Top Ten Place to work

Metro Tech was recognized as a Top Ten Place to work in Oklahoma by the Daily Oklahoman. The recognition is based on a number of factors that make working at the school more productive for the employees and more successful for the students. Metro Tech is especially proud of their employees and the work they do for youth, adults and companies.

Gordon Cooper program achieves 100 percent success

The 2012-2013 Gordon Cooper Tech Center paramedic class had a 100 percent National Registry Certification pass rate and a 0 percent attrition rate (meaning everyone that enrolled, completed the program). In fact, all graduates passed the national certification exam on their first attempt!

The paramedic program’s adjunct instructors deserve a lot of credit because this is the second year in a row the paramedic program has had a 100 percent first time pass rate. Gordon Cooper’s paramedic program now has a three-year average first time pass rate of 95 percent. (The state average first time pass rate is 67 percent and nationally it is 73 percent.)

Career Cluster Institute coming in June

The 12th annual Career Cluster Institute will be June 16-18, 2014. The event is a great way to learn more about CareerTech innovations from around the country. The location of the event is Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort in Phoenix, AZ.

Quality Oklahoma to help with continuous improvement efforts

The state’s Baldrige organization, Quality Oklahoma, is preparing to help the transition from regulatory accreditation to continuous improvement accreditation. This effort is being undertaken by the agency in the next year or so. Tech Centers going through accreditation currently are unaffected, but those engaging in the process can opt to participate in the newer accreditation process. Work continues to assure the process is approved by the national accrediting body for accrediting bodies. Yes, there is such an organization!
