MNTC Staff Members Now FEMA Trained as a Community Emergency Response Team
(NORMAN, Okla.) Aug. 21, 2014 – Moore Norman Technology Center has taken another step in certifying staff members to handle safety and crisis situations for students, visitors and MNTC employees by generating and training its first Community Emergency Response Team, also known as CERT.
The CERT program is a FEMA initiative that educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area. The program trains them in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, and team organization and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.
This initial team of staff members to receive the free CERT 2 1-2 day training is made up of 13 members of MNTC's Safety Team. Most of the training was held at MNTC's Franklin Road Campus in Norman, with a final training exercise held at the Norman Fire Training Station.
MNTC Director of Operations Jerry McConnell said, "This team will be instrumental in providing disaster response to the campus community, as well as offer assistance to the community."
The CERT will maintain training in disaster preparedness and life saving skills through a mentorship with the Norman Police Department and The City of Norman's Office of Emergency Management.
MNTC CERT Team members include: James Belcher; Claudia Burton; Christine Clark; Penny Cramer; Debra Henry; Colleen Hill; Red Day Johnson; Deputy Diana Jones; Chris Klein, coordinator; Deputy Chris Mason; Rafael Tirado; Rick Spaulding and Marlene Walker.
