Metro Technology Centers and Creative Oklahoma take artistic partnership to new heights

OKLAHOMA CITY – Metro Technology Centers students and Creative Oklahoma will collaborate with renowned artist Douglas Elder to create a unique five-story design and installation art project for the 2013 State of Creativity Forum being held on Nov. 19 at the Civic Center Music Hall.
The installation provides an opportunity for more than 50 students to apply STEM-related education and will adorn the guest point-of-entry in the Civic Center Music Hall atrium lobby. The finished project will mimic this year’s theme, “Building Bridges," showcasing student talent from four unique technical career training programs: AutoCAD, graphic and video design and construction.
Through this collaborative effort under the direction of Elder, students will experience the importance of teamwork, communication and working across disciplines. Russ Powers, AutoCAD teacher at Metro Tech, is one of many faculty members who will oversee the project. He said he saw the partnership benefits from the first meeting with Creative Oklahoma and Elder.
“Students will follow the design process through schematics, development and construction which allows them to apply classroom concepts and opportunities to work with other disciplines,” Powers said.
This year’s forum marks Metro Tech’s third year of involvement with Creative Oklahoma, and according to Cindy Friedemann, district strategist for Metro Tech, the students glean benefits that last long after the forum ends.
“The Creativity Forum ignites the students’ passions and shows them possibilities for their future,” Friedemann said. “They hear from creative-minded speakers and learn that a career and continued learning do not have to be boring. The students leave inspired and excited.”
