Course Title

Landscape and Nursery Production

Course Description

This is a one-credit course for students with interests in acquiring knowledge and skill in landscape design and installation, including maintenance, and the production of nursery stock. Content includes the importance of the landscape industry, landscape safety, materials used in landscaping, principles of design, xeriscaping, nursery production in fields and containers, plant selection, disease and pest management, establishing plant materials, landscape plant nutrition and fertilization, irrigation, and pruning and otherwise managing nursery and landscape materials. Fundamentals of landscape and nursery business management will also be included. FFA and supervised experience will be included as appropriate. The units and benchmarks are organized so that the course may be offered in two semester-length courses. One semester course would be landscaping; the other would be nursery production. Units LNP1, LNP2, LNP3, and LNP4 would be shared in the semester courses to cover content appropriate to the subject of the course. Units LNP5, LNP6, LNP7, LNP8, and LNP9 would be taught in the semester-long landscaping course. Units LNP10, LNP11, LNP12, and LNP13 would be taught in the semester-long nursery production course.

Unit LNP1: Importance and nature of landscaping and nursery production (4 hours)

Benchmark LNP1-1: Students will describe the meaning and role of landscaping.

Benchmark LNP1-2: Students will describe the nature of nursery production.

Unit LNP2: Career entry and advancement in landscaping and nursery production (4 hours)

Benchmark LNP2-1: Students will identify occupations in landscaping and nursery production and list the competencies needed for occupational entry.

Benchmark LNP2-2: Students will name and describe important personal skills for success in landscaping and nursery production.

Unit LNP3: Safety (4 hours)

Benchmark LNP3-1: Students will assess safety situations with landscaping and nursery production and choose appropriate safety practices.

Benchmark LNP3-2: Students will properly select, use, and maintain personal protective equipment when working in landscaping and nursery production.

Unit LNP4: Agricultural education (5 hours)

Benchmark LNP4-1: Students will manage an appropriate supervised experience in landscaping and nursery production.

Benchmark LNP4-2: Students will identify opportunities for participation and advancement in the FFA related to landscaping and nursery production.

Unit LNP5: Landscape planning (15 hours)

Benchmark LNP5-1: Students will describe how landscape plans are prepared and identify information needed in planning.

Benchmark LNP5-2. Students will explain site assessment and use site measurements in preparing a plan.

Benchmark LNP5-3: Students will identify principles of art and design in landscaping.

Benchmark LNP5-4: Students will use computer-aided design or other methods to prepare a landscape site plan that includes major design areas and bed patterns.

Unit LNP6: Landscape plants and materials (9 hours)

Benchmark LNP6-1: Students will identify popular landscape plant materials by type and common and scientific names.

Benchmark LNP6-2: Students will classify landscape plant materials by growth characteristics and climate requirements.

Benchmark LNP6-3: Students will identify non-plant materials used in landscaping and explain the use of each.

Unit LNP7: Landscape plant growth processes (8 hours)

Benchmark LNP7-1: Students will explain the meaning and role of photosynthesis and respiration in landscape plant growth.

Benchmark LNP7-2: Students will demonstrate the preparation of beds and turf areas for establishing plants.

Benchmark LNP7-3: Students will describe the nutrient needs of plants and how the nutrients are provided.

Benchmark LNP7-4: Students will assess soil for nutrients and apply appropriate amendments.

Benchmark LNP7-5: Students will identify plant diseases and select appropriate methods of prevention and treatment.

Unit LNP8: Landscape installation and maintenance (16 hours)

Benchmark LNP8-1: Students will demonstrate the use of a planting plan in establishing a landscape.

Benchmark LNP8-2: Student will identify and properly use tools and equipment in establishing and maintaining landscapes.

Benchmark LNP8-3: Students will survey and grade a landscape for planting.

Benchmark LNP8-4: Students will identify how landscape plants have been harvested and choose appropriate planting techniques.

Benchmark LNP8-5: Students will demonstrate the use of irrigation, borders, and mulch in landscaping.

Benchmark LNP8-6: Students will demonstrate the maintenance of established landscapes.

Benchmark LNP8-7: Students will explain the uses of walks, patios, and decks in a landscape.

Unit LNP9: Lawn establishment and maintenance (7 hours)

Benchmark LNP9-1: Students will identify common turf plants and choose the appropriate materials for a specific application.

Benchmark LNP9-2: Students will describe the methods used in establishing turf and select the methods for a particular turf area.

Benchmark LNP9-3: Students will relate irrigation, fertilization, and pest management in lawn establishment and maintenance.

Benchmark LNP9-4: Students will demonstrate mowing, aerating, and other practices in lawn care.

Unit LNP10: Nursery production management (13 hours)

Benchmark LNP10-1: Students will identify and explain factors in establishing a nursery, including facilities and equipment.

Benchmark LNP10-2: Students will compare and contrast field and container nursery production.

Benchmark LNP10-3: Students will identify nursery crops by common and scientific names.

Benchmark LNP10-4: Students will evaluate nursery crops for quality and presence of damage.

Unit LNP11: Nursery plant propagation (8 hours)

Benchmark LNP11-1: Students will demonstrate the sexual propagation of plants in nursery production.

Benchmark LNP11-2: Students will demonstrate the asexual propagation of plants in nursery production.

Unit LNP12: Nursery crop production (20 hours)

Benchmark LNP12-1: Students will explain essential conditions for the culture of nursery crops.

Benchmark LNP12-2: Students will discuss the importance of water in nursery crop production and demonstrate methods of irrigation with selected crops.

Benchmark LNP12-3: Students will explain pest management and demonstrate practices in nursery crop production.

Benchmark LNP12-4: Students will discuss the importance of nursery plant nutrition and demonstrate practices in meeting nutrient needs.

Benchmark LNP12-5: Students will demonstrate proper care practices for harvested nursery crops, including transportation of harvested nursery plants.

Unit LNP13: Nursery production business (7 hours)

Benchmark LNP13-1: Students will describe general procedures in the operation of a nursery production business.

Benchmark LNP13-2: Students will identify records needed and maintain appropriate records on nursery crop production.
