Introduction to Agriscience
Introduction to AgriScience is a one-credit, foundational course offered at the ninth grade level. Course content emphasizes science-based approaches to the agricultural industry, natural resources, animal science, plant/horticulture and soil science, agricultural safety, agribusiness and economic principles, careers, and agricultural mechanics. Supervised experience and FFA are included in the course. Students would typically complete this course before enrolling in courses in the career pathways.

Unit IAG1: Introduction to the agricultural industry (8 hours)
Benchmark IAG1-1: Students will explain the meaning and importance of the agricultural industry in meeting human needs.*
Benchmark IAG1-2: Students will list and describe major areas of the agricultural industry in the nation, state, and local community as well as globally.*
Benchmark IAG1-3: Students will discuss historical developments in the agricultural industry.
Benchmark IAG1-4: Students will identify the roles of biotechnology and technology in the agricultural industry.
Unit IAG2: Career entry and advancement in the agricultural industry (10 hours)
Benchmark IAG2-1: Students will list and discuss the seven career pathways of agriculture study.
Benchmark IAG2-2: Students will identify agriculture, food and natural resources careers and the competencies needed to enter the careers *.
Benchmark IAG2-3: Students will name and describe important interpersonal skills for career success.*
Unit IAG3: Agricultural safety (5 hours)
Benchmark IAG3-1: Students will assess safety situations and choose appropriate safety practices.*
Benchmark IAG3-2: Students will properly select, use, and maintain personal protective equipment.*
Unit IAG4: Agribusiness and economic principles (8 hours)
Benchmark IAG4-1: Students will distinguish among economic systems and describe ways of doing business in capitalism.
Benchmark IAG4-2: Students will select and appropriately use record keeping systems.*
Benchmark IAG4-3: Students will discuss the importance of marketing in the agricultural industry
Unit IAG5: Animal agriculture (23 hours)
Benchmark IAG5-1: Students will identify important agricultural animals and the benefits of each species.*
Benchmark IAG5-2: Students will explain the importance of animal agriculture in Oklahoma and the United States.*
Benchmark IAG5-3: Students will identify major breeds of livestock produced in Oklahoma and contrast and compare the merits of each breed.
Benchmark IAG5-4: Students will identify and explain major anatomical and physiological features of agricultural animals
Benchmark IAG5-5: Students will explain the meaning and importance of animal well-being and identify production practices that promote well-being.*
Benchmark IAG5-6: Students will follow appropriate management practices in animal production.
Benchmark IAG5-7: Students will choose appropriate nutrients and feed to assure efficient animal production.
Benchmark IAG5-8: Students will select practices that promote animal health and production.
Unit IAG6: Plant, horticulture, and soil science (17 hours)
Benchmark IAG6-1: Students will identify important agricultural and horticultural plants and discuss benefits of each.*
Benchmark IAG6-2: Students will distinguish and classify plants on the basis of life cycle.*
Benchmark IAG6-3: Students will identify the major vegetative structures of plants and discuss the functions of each.
Benchmark IAG6-4: Students will distinguish between sexual and asexual propagation and identify the structures and procedures that are involved.
Benchmark IAG6-5: Students will describe the role of nutrients and nutrition in plant growth.
Benchmark IAG6-6: Students will discuss the importance of soil and its constituents.*
Unit IAG7: Natural resources (8 hours)
Benchmark IAG7-1: Students will identify important natural resources and classify as renewable or nonrenewable.*
Benchmark IAG7-2: Students will explain the meaning of sustainable resource use and identify practices that contribute to sustainability.
Unit IAG8: Agricultural mechanics (22 hours)
Benchmark IAG8-1: Students will identify hazards and demonstrate appropriate safety practices in agricultural mechanics work.*
Benchmark IAG8-2: Students will discuss the role and importance of agricultural power and technology
Benchmark IAG8-3: Students will identify common hand and power tools in agricultural mechanics
Benchmark IAG8-4: Students will explain the meaning and importance of metals fabrication.
Benchmark IAG8-5: Students will identify equipment used in metals fabrication and discuss safety issues in using the equipment, including personal protection.
Benchmark IAG8-6: Students will identify kinds of metals and select appropriate arc welding supplies
Benchmark IAG8-7: Students will identify electrodes and make selections based on the kind of metal to be welded.
Benchmark IAG8-8: Students will properly operate equipment to strike an arc and lay flat beads.
Benchmark IAG8-9: Students will prepare metal surfaces for welding.
Benchmark IAG8-10: Students will demonstrate the use of a tape measure in measuring metal materials.
Unit IAG9: Agricultural education (19 hours)
Benchmark IAG9-1: Students will explain the meaning and importance of agricultural education.*
Benchmark IAG9-2: Students will describe the role, importance, and kinds of supervised agricultural experience.*
Benchmark IAG9-3: Students will plan, establish, and manage an appropriate supervised experience program.
Benchmark IAG9-4: Students will discuss the history, origin, and traditions of FFA membership.*
Benchmark IAG9-5: Students will memorize and recite the FFA Creed and explain the ideals and beliefs it portrays .
Benchmark IAG9-6: Students will identify basic FFA information, including history, motto, colors, mission, emblem, and official dress.
Benchmark IAG9-7: Students will list and discuss the benefits of FFA membership.
Benchmark IAG9-8: Students will explain organization of the local FFA chapter, including officers and advisor.
Benchmark IAG9-9: Students will list degrees of FFA membership and explain how to advance
Benchmark IAG9-10: Students will demonstrate leadership skill development by preparing speeches, participation in meetings, and engaging in FFA activities.
Benchmark IAG9-11: Students will explain the meaning and use of parliamentary procedure in the conduct of business meetings.
