Francis Tuttle Technology Center started training new employees for customer service and sales with The Hartford in 1998, soon after the company began hiring for a new center.

The Hartford, a national property and casualty insurance company founded in 1810, was opening its Personal Lines Insurance Center in Oklahoma City. The company needed a large number of employees in a short amount of time to become licensed by the Oklahoma Insurance Commission.

Today, the Oklahoma City center has more than 400 employees and is expanding. The Hartford, together with its training partner Francis Tuttle, has created a model that the company now uses nationwide for new employee training.

"Hiring individuals who must pass the extremely difficult Oklahoma Property and Casualty Licensure exam, but had not previously worked in the insurance industry, presented a true challenge," said Lou Kalisiak, site leader of The Hartford's Personal Lines Insurance Center.

That's why The Hartford has been recognized as a CareerTech Business Champion.

CareerTech Business Champions are those businesses that attribute much of their economic success to the partnerships they have formed with the local technology center or high school CareerTech programs. Francis Tuttle is one of 29 technology center districts serving Oklahomans.

Francis Tuttle's Business and Industry Services team provided instructors to work hand-in-hand with The Hartford's trainers and managers to prepare their new employees to successfully pass the licensing exam.

The goal of the training was not only to obtain licensure, but for the new associates to gain a solid understanding of the insurance industry while learning how to best serve the customer. All new associates spend their first two weeks with The Hartford in training at Francis Tuttle.

"Without Francis Tuttle's generosity in providing support, we might have been a month longer in getting started," Kalisiak said.

Training for The Hartford was provided through Oklahoma's nationally recognized Training for Industry Program (TIP). The availability of these training services was a major incentive for The Hartford to locate in Oklahoma.
