Webster's dreams may have come to a halt after his accident, but with the help of vocational rehabilitation counseling and training at Kiamichi Technology Center, Stigler, he was able to find a new profession in the computer business.

That is why he has been recognized as a CareerTech Champion. Champions are alumni of the system's programs or student organizations who attribute much of their professional success to their CareerTech experience.

"Until 1991, I hadn't considered where my life was heading," he said. "Then a swimming accident at the age of 22 left me a quadriplegic."

Deciding to enroll in computer training classes at Kiamichi was not easy in the beginning. He needed a lot of encouragement from the technology center staff.

"At first I didn't like the idea of going back to school with a disability," he said. "Now I realize that I probably wouldn't have worked again if not for the support of my business and computer services instructor, Nellwyn Carlton."

Carlton said that when Webster first came to Kiamichi, he had no desire to be there.

"The guy from vocational rehab made him come," she said. "At first Scott wanted no part of it. But before the semester was over, he was offering to help me in the class."

Carlton said Webster, who used to be an electrician, had a natural gift for computers.

"He is a fast learner and wanted to learn these new skills," Carlton said. "He ended up helping me much more than I helped him."

Webster graduated from the computer training program and went on to receive certification to build and repair computers.

"After graduating I started my own business, Budget Computers in Whitefield," he said. "We build computers for local businesses, including those on my old training ground, Kiamichi Tech. Stigler campus."

When he is not working, Webster enjoys a high-tech hobby. He likes flying remote control airplanes.

Webster is grateful for his experience at Kiamichi Technology Center.

"CareerTech training gave me back my life with a future to look forward to," he said.
