National DECA Week Highlights Marketing Student Activities

Fifty-Five chapters with 3,000 members in Oklahoma will be celebrating National DECA week October 12-18, 2003.

DECA is a student organization whose program of leadership and personal development is designed for high school students enrolled in marketing education.

"Any student enrolled in marketing education can join DECA. Students elect their own officers and marketing education teacher/coordinators serve as individual chapter advisors," said Lettie Dilbeck, state DECA Adviser.

Chapter officers will begin the week attending the 20th Annual DECA Fall Leadership Development Conference, which begins on Monday, October 13, at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond. This years theme is ‘Tune in to Success, DECA, The Sound of Success.” The Oklahoma DECA State Officers will present leadership skill development workshops for chapter officers, which will enable them to better serve their members at the local level.

Throughout the year, DECA members will participate in numerous activities. Many high school DECA chapters develop and implement a DECA Week Promotional Campaigns in the local business community, in their high school, or in an elementary school The activities are designed to develop well educated citizens who have self-confidence, self-esteem, leadership ability and an understanding of the American Free Enterprise System.

" DECA Chapters are self-supporting, with members paying chapter, state association and national membership dues," Dilbeck said.

DECA is the CareerTech student organization supporting marketing education, and provides students the opportunity to building vital leadership and teamwork skills as well as the option to compete in a wide variety of skill building competitive activities.

The association of marketing students is the only student organization operating in 50 states, the four U.S. territories and Canada that prepares students for productive careers in marketing, management and entrepreneurship. It serves as an integral part of the marketing education classroom instructional program, and has 180,000 members nationally.
