Del City Student Elected to National DECA Office

Cory Cox, a marketing education student from Del City, was recently elected as national Southern Region vice president at DECA’s 57th annual International Career Development Conference held recently in Orlando, Fla.

DECA is an international student organization associated with marketing education, and is sponsored at the state level by the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education.

Cox was among dozens of candidates campaigning in the election to fill one of the four regional vice president positions to serve on the national officer team. The campaigning process consisted of delegates participating in a screening, as well as caucuses, speeches, campaign booths and state delegate campaigning.

During his campaign, Cox created the theme, “Communicate with Cox-Leadership Guaranteed,” for marketing his leadership skills.

“My three years experiences in DECA have given me the confidence to guarantee leadership to the Southern Region,” Cox said. “With this office, I guarantee that I will work hard to fulfill all the members expectations of me through my service as their leader.”

As a national officer, Cox’s primary role is to be an ambassador for the organization. While in office, his job will include promoting the organization, giving workshops and speeches for students, further developing corporate support, making recommendations to the board of directors and appearing at state and national conferences. His office includes 13 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

“In addition to Cory being an active DECA member, he is active in track, an assistant manager at a local food establishment, actively involved with his church and maintains above a 3.0 GPA,” said Barbara Inselman, Del City marketing education instructor and DECA adviser. “Cox is a well rounded young man and is a true asset to the DECA organization.”

Since DECA was formed in 1947, Oklahoma has had seven national presidents, seven Southern Region vice presidents and two collegiate presidents. The organization now has more than 180,000 students enrolled in over 6,000 schools nationally and 4,000 students enrolled in 51 chapters in Oklahoma, according to Lettie Dilbeck, DECA state adviser.

DECA is one of seven CareerTech student organizations in Oklahoma. Together, these organizations have more than 80,000 high school and adult students. Many students are enrolled in more than one of these occupational programs and are members of multiple student organizations.

The seven student organizations and programs they support are: Business Professionals of America (BPA), business and information technology education; DECA, marketing education; Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), family and consumer sciences education; FFA, agricultural education; Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), health occupations education; SkillsUSA, trade and industrial education; and Technology Student Association (TSA), technology education.
