Oklahoma FCCLA Produces Anti-Violence Video

Locker rooms, lunchrooms and hallways are the most likely spots in a school for bullying to take place. Just how to stop that bullying is a task that many Oklahoma high school students hope to tackle through an educational video recently produced as part of a student-led, anti-violence initiative.

Part of a grant for $3,000, awarded to Oklahoma’s Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) STOP the Violence initiative late last year, was used to create an educational video.
Local FCCLA chapters and advisors will be trained on how to lead training on the local level, incorporating the video Oct. 2-3 in Oklahoma City.

FCCLA is the career and technology student organization associated with family and consumer sciences education and has 13,238 members in 407 chapters across Oklahoma. It is one of seven career and technology student organizations sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education.

STOP the Violence is the national FCCLA peer-to-peer initiative, which began five years ago in Oklahoma as one-of-eleven pilot states. STOP empowers young people to recognize, report and reduce the potential for youth violence, according to Denise Morris, state FCCLA advisor. The video shows young people how bullying and other situations have the potential to lead to violence.

Oklahoma is among the nation's leaders in the number of projects that have been carried out and the number of chapters that have been trained, said Morris.

“Since 1999, when this initiative began in Oklahoma, our FCCLA chapters have held many assemblies educating their peers about how to recognize violent situations, report them to authorities and then reduce the number of violent acts in their schools and communities,” she said.

“The video will be an important piece in anti-violence training provided across the state by local FCCLA chapters,” said Morris. “There will also be a parents’ guide on what to do if your child is being bullied. We have earned a reputation for quality projects and programs and I think that helps when applying for grants.”
Oklahoma was one of eight states to receive the grant, awarded by the national FCCLA organization and the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Programs.
