Stop the Violence Training

For the fifth year, team training will be conducted for Students Taking On Prevention (STOP) the Violence in Oklahoma. More than 130 students and advisors from across the state are registered to participate in the Oct. 2-3 training to be held at the Biltmore Hotel in Oklahoma City.

STOP the Violence is a national Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) peer-to-peer initiative, which empowers young people to recognize, report and reduce the potential for youth violence, said Denise Morris, state FCCLA advisor.

“ More than 1,500 junior and senior high school students and advisers in Oklahoma have been through STOP training over the past four years,” Morris said.

STOP is a national FCCLA peer educational training designed to teach advisers and members about teen violence prevention. It is sponsored by FCCLA and funded by the U.S. Department of Justice Juvenile Detention Division.

Five years ago, Oklahoma served as one of 13 pilot states for this student-led initiative, according to Morris.

FCCLA is the career and technology student organization associated with family and consumer sciences education and has 13,238 members in 407 chapters across Oklahoma. It is one of seven career and technology student organizations sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education.

“This year the training has been split into two different sessions,” Morris said. “STOP Academy I is for ninth grade and below. STOP Academy II is for 10-12 grade. Most of the activities have changed over the past five years, and we now have a set of puppets that are in use this year and a video that was produced by the students for each participating team to take home with them.”

The video shows young people how bullying and other situations have the potential to lead to violence, according to Morris. There will also be a parents’ guide on what to do if your child is being bullied.

Leading the training will be facilitators from Nebraska, New Jersey, South Dakota and Virginia, Brenda Brixey, the Oklahoma STOP coordinator along with Michelle Flinton, the National STOP Coordinator from Reston, Virginia who is also an Oklahoma State University graduate.
