Five CareerTech Student Organization
Conferences Scheduled for April
April is scheduled to be a busy month for
most of the 80,000 students who are members of Oklahoma career
and technology student organizations (CTSOs). Five of the seven
CTSOs, sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology
Education, have spring leadership conferences scheduled.
"These organizations provide thousands
of Oklahoma students with public speaking skills, leadership
training and valuable work place experience preparing them for
life after graduation," said Pete Buswell, state CareerTech
director.

The Technology Student Association State Conference
from April 1-3 in Oklahoma City. TSA, which supports technology
education for middle and high school students, will be celebrating
its 25th anniversary. |

The Health
Occupations Students of America (HOSA) State Leadership
Conference will be held from April 10-11 at the Meridian
Convention Center, Oklahoma
City. The conference will feature health occupation education students
competing in a series of medical-related events such as CPR/First
Aid, sports medicine and dental assisting. Several health care firms
will also be recruiting potential employees at the conference,
according
to Lynn Hughes, HOSA state advisor. *

Family
Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), the student organization associated with family and
consumer sciences education, will hold its state convention on April
11 at the Cox Convention Center, Oklahoma City. One of the featured
speakers is Marcus Engel, who lost his sight in a car accident at
18. According to Denise Morris, FCCLA state advisor, his presentation
fits in with FCCLA's national community service project, Families
Acting for Community Traffic Safety (FACTS). *

SkillsUSA-VICA, the student organization associated with trade
and industrial education, will have its state skills competition
from April 24-26, at the Biltmore Hotel and the State Fairgrounds
in Oklahoma City. "A large number of industry partners support
SkillsUSA-VICA medalists with prizes and scholarships,"
said Julie Tapp, state SkillsUSA-VICA coordinator. "One
partner, Gulf States Toyota, will award $1,000 scholarships to
the top secondary and postsecondary winners in automotive technology." |

FFA, the student organization associated with agricultural
education, will hosts its state convention from April 29-30 in
Oklahoma City. Motivational speaker Zig Ziglar will be
a keynote speaker at the convention. |

Two CTSOs, Business
Professionals of America (BPA), supporting business and
information technology education, and DECA,
supporting marketing education, held their state conference in
March. |
