State Superintendent’s Award to Guthrie Schools

Guthrie Schools received the State Superintendent’s Award for outstanding delivery of career and technology education programs at CareerTech Summer Conference 2004 held recently at the Tulsa Convention Center.

The award was established in 1994 by State Superintendent Sandy Garrett to recognize outstanding achievement with regard to delivery of career and technology education in comprehensive high schools, according to Phil Berkenbile, CareerTech state director.

In addition to offering quality career and technology programs, schools that have been selected have met other criteria, including showing evidence of integrating academic and career and technology instruction, offering appropriate career guidance, and working to implement a comprehensive school-to-work system

The CareerTech programs at Guthrie Schools have been under the direction of Superintendent Max Townsend, who retired at the end of this past school year.

Terry Simpson, new superintendent at Guthrie, plans on continuing quality CareerTech programs, Berkenbile said. Guthrie offers CareerTech programs in Agricultural Education, Family and Consumer Sciences Education, Technology Education, and the Trade and Industrial Education area. These programs serve more than 802 students enrolled in the Guthrie School system.
