Gulf States Toyota Awards $15,000 in
Automotive Scholarships
Six students from technology centers across the state each received
$2,500 Gulf States Toyota Technical Education Network (T-TEN)
scholarships
at the recent SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Championships.
The conference was recently held at the Tulsa Convention Center/Adams
Mark/Doubletree Downtown.
SkillsUSA is
sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of CareerTech. It is the student
organization associated with trade
and industrial
education,
and is one of seven student organizations supporting occupational
areas.
Automotive technology
skills were contested in both secondary and post-secondary categories,
according to Don Cole, technical capacity
manager for Gulf
States Toyota. Cole recognized the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners
in each category with a $2,500 “GST T-TEN” scholarship
at OSU-Okmulgee on April 26.
Postsecondary
scholarship winners are 1st place, Gold: Bryan Helms, Northwest Technology
Center, Alva;
2nd place, Silver: Jacob Schmidt,
Autry Technology
Center, Enid; 3rd place, Bronze: John Corum, Francis Tuttle,
Oklahoma City.
Secondary winners
include 1st place, Gold: Matthew Barnard, Moore Norman Technology Center;
2nd place, Silver: Hank Yauk, High
Plains Technology
Center, Woodward; and 3rd place, Bronze: Drew Williams, Red
River Technology Center, Duncan.
Gulf States Toyota
is one of the many industries that provide strong, on-going support
to CareerTech’s
trade and industry programs, according to Orville Manuel, CareerTech
automotive program state advisor.
To create tomorrow’s best
technicians, Toyota dealerships also partner with college automotive
programs to offer the T-TEN, according
to Don Cole, technical capacity manager for Gulf States Toyota.
