Oklahoma's CareerTech System Assisting Hurricane Victims

Oklahoma’s CareerTech system is responding to the needs of those affected by the Katrina disaster in a variety of ways, according to Phil Berkenbile, state director.

“ We want to extend any help we can to those who have experienced such a traumatic event,” Berkenbile said. “Our hearts and prayers go out to all who have been impacted by Katrina.”

From career counseling and assessments to offering office space for companies to begin recovery efforts, Berkenbile said technology centers and others at the agency are positioned to fill training and workforce needs as well as offering services in guidance and counseling.

At Indian Capitol Technology Center staff is in the process of determining just what those needs are for those housed at Camp Gruber. They have conducted meetings and are distributing information about skills assessment and training opportunities. The students and staff at the technology center are partnering with other local organizations to provide needed items.

According to Roberta Scott Hamilton, public information coordinator at the technology center, there is a need of cash donations through the Red Cross or Salvation Army to meet specific needs of the evacuees.

"We have had a huge outpouring of donations from our community, so we understand officials are having to warehouse many items,” Scott Hamilton said. “Our students have been collecting donations for the Red Cross efforts."

Individually many Indian Capital students and staff members have volunteered to sort donations, serve meals, hand out supplies, etc., through their community organizations and church groups.

Students who are enrolled in high schools can take advantage of CareerTech courses offered at technology centers at no charge, Berkenbile said.

Throughout the state, CareerTech student organizations also are involved in relief efforts, he said.

“ Our agency also is providing Skills to Rebuild curriculum to Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi CareerTech agencies,” he said. “This curriculum, developed in response to the 1999 tornados in Oklahoma, provides basic training in construction and safety for those who want to work in the construction industry or help with their own rebuilding efforts.”

Berkenbile said he is in contact with the Governor’s office and other state agencies to determine how to best coordinate relief efforts.

“Our mission is to help people succeed in the workplace, in education and life. We stand ready to assist the victims of this terrible tragedy in whatever way we can.”

Berkenbile recommends that individuals affected by the disaster contact technology centers in their areas to determine the types of services available.
