CareerTech Champion Participates at Summer Conference 2006 Lesa Foster, who is being recognized as a CareerTech Champion, will join more than 3,500 Oklahomans Aug. 1-3 at the Career and Technology Education Summer Conference. This year marks the 39th annual conference and will be held at the Tulsa Convention Center. “Summer Conference is an opportunity for CareerTech educators from across the state to share ideas, learn new educational techniques and prepare for the coming school year," said Phil Berkenbile, state director of the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education. “This conference is the major professional development activity for Oklahoma CareerTech teachers, counselors, administrators and state staff. Participants will learn innovative technical and instructional skills. They will also have the opportunity to network and learn from their counterparts throughout the state.” The conference also features nationally known artist and humorist Sam Glenn, more than 150 exhibits and recognition of outstanding individuals and organizations in CareerTech. Gov. Brad Henry has been invited to attend. Foster, regional director of income development for the American Cancer Society, comes to the conference to share her expertise with Family Career and Community Leaders of America chapter advisers from across the state. In 1984-85 Foster served as state president for Future Homemakers of America, now FCCLA. Both are affiliated with Family and Consumer Sciences Education. Last year, the National FCCLA Association adopted the ACS national project Relay for Life as its national project for 2005-07. Now, Foster is giving back to the CareerTech student organization, to which she attributes much of her success, by speaking to some 450 FCCLA local chapter advisers about Relay for Life during summer conference. “Lesa is a perfect example of a CareerTech Champion,” Berkenbile said. “A champion is someone who is successful and attributes some of that success to their CareerTech experience, whether it’s through a high school or adult program, business and industry training or student organization.” FCCLA is one of seven CareerTech student organizations sponsored by the state CareerTech agency with more than 78,000 members statewide. “FCCLA has so much to offer students,” Foster said. “It teaches students a variety of skills and alternate opportunities to become involved in the community. So many students can learn skills you don’t learn anywhere else. These are the skills students will use, no matter what they do in life.” The other six student organizations and the programs they support are: DECA, marketing education; Health Occupations Students of America, health careers education; Business Professionals of America, business and information technology education; Technology Student Association, technology education; SkillsUSA, trade and industrial education; and FFA, agricultural education. Outstanding CareerTech educators, administrators as well as business and industry partners are also honored at the conference. And the Oklahoma Association of Career and Technology Education will conduct its annual business meeting and install the new Oklahoma ACTE president. A leadership seminar will be held for the new OKACTE officers and committee members to familiarize them with their duties and responsibilities following the conference.
