FCCLA Focuses On 'The Student Body'

Oklahoma Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America members recently participated in Chapters in Action. The event was held at the Reed Conference Center in Midwest City with close to 200 Oklahoma FCCLA members learning more about the 2008 National FCCLA project, “The Student Body.”

Family and Consumer Sciences Education, and its affiliated student organization FCCLA, are integral components of CareerTech education.

“Every year, FCCLA members tackle issues such as traffic safety, family issues, and career exploration with such programs as Stop the Violence,” said Denise Morris, state FCCLA adviser.

FCCLA programs enrich student learning, improve self-esteem, and serve students with a range of ability levels, economic situations and cultural influences.

“The main goal of Chapters in Action is to teach students and advisers about the national program and give them ideas of projects that could be carried out in their schools and communities,” Morris said. “This program teaches youth how to eat correctly and be fit and healthy by making healthy choices.”

At the event students saw presentations by the American Red Cross about HIV and the Oklahoma Beef Council about nutrition. The Chandler Positive Peer Group also acted various scenarios for the members.

FCCLA helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work, and societal issues. More than 13,000 Oklahoma students in junior and senior high school are members of  FCCLA.

“FCCLA is unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by members,” Morris said. “It is the only CareerTech in-school student organization with the family as its central focus. Participation in national programs and chapter activities helps members become strong leaders in their families, careers and communities.”
