Twitter

Summer Conference is getting interactive and you don't want to be left out. Get involved, join the conversation and the huge, live Twitter feed during the General Sessions. There will be a lot to talk, or tweet, about this year!

How do you get involved and become interactive? Joining Twitter is the first step.

Twitter is a micro-blogging service that is free and fun. Your tweets are limited to 140 characters, so keep it short and simple. You can use Twitter on your laptop, iPad, iPhone, Blackberry or Android device.

Why would you want to follow along with Twitter? Did a speaker make a great point and you want to share it? Was a website shared that you would like others to know about?  Do you want to know what everyone is saying in the backchannel? Perhaps you just completed your presentation and want to share your PowerPoint with others who are attending. These are just a few of the reasons to get involved, but you have to sign up first.

  1. Go to http://twitter.com and find the sign-up box.
  2. Enter your name, your email address and a password.
  3. Click Sign up for Twitter.
  4. On the next page, select a username – type your own or choose the one we've suggested. We'll tell you if the one you want is available. (Usernames are unique identifiers on Twitter.)
  5. Double-check your name, email address, password, and username.
  6. Click Create my account. (You may be asked to complete a Captcha to let us know you're human.)
  7. Next, you just need to begin finding and following accounts that interest you. Following others means you are subscribing to their tweets.

Following, Hashtags and ReTweeting Oh My!

If it all seems a little overwhelming, don't worry. We are here to help. The first thing you need to do after creating an account is find someone to follow. We have a suggestion.

@okcareertech and @OkACTE

So what is a hashtag? Very simply, it is a # or pound sign, and it is a simple way to track topics. Do you want to see what people are saying about career and technical education on Twitter? Search the #careerteched hashtag.

The hashtag for summer conference is #okacte; use it with all your tweets to make sure your voice is heard. How do you do it? Here is an example tweet:

2013  Twitter Hashtag

Like something that someone says? Give them a retweet. Want to keep up with them? Follow them. There is much more to learn, but the steps above will get you started. If you don't like just jumping in, head over to Twitter for some Twitter 101.

Don't see your Tweets on the screen or when you search #OKACTE? Be sure to not make your Tweets private. If they are, they will only be shared with your followers and not show up with the rest of the fun at #OKACTE.
