Certification Requirements for Career and Technology Education Teachers

Alternative Certification

 

1.     Must have bachelor's degree with a major that corresponds to an area of certification offered through the State Department of Education Alternative Placement Program.

 

2.  Applicant must pass a series of tests determined by the Oklahoma Commission for Teacher Preparation. The tests generally consist of the Oklahoma General Education Test (OGET), Oklahoma Subject Area Test (OSAT), and the Oklahoma Professional Teaching Exam (OPTE).

 

3.     Applicants, after successfully completing the OSAT and OGET, will be permitted to teach for a three-year period using this license. At the end of three years, the OPTE and any college coursework/professional development clock hours must be completed. Also, the candidate must apply and receive a favorable recommendation from the Teacher Competency Review Panel. For more information on Alternative Certification, please contact:

Certificate/License (ADDING DISCIPLINES)

The holder of a valid Oklahoma teaching certificate or license may add additional subject matter areas by successfully completing the Oklahoma Subject Area Test (OSAT) in that particular field of study.  If a candidate would like to move from an elementary credential to a secondary credential, or vice versa, the candidate must     complete the Oklahoma Professional Teaching Exam (OPTE).  These tests may be taken to teach in the following Career and Technology Education disciplines:  Agricultural Education, Family and Consumer Sciences Education, Technology Education, Business and Information Technology Education, and Marketing Education.  Recommendation for approval must be made by the appropriate Program Manager or Administrator from the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education.
