Certification Requirements for Career and Technology Education Teachers
Health Careers Education Certification
1. A Faculty Record Form must be on file in the Health Careers Education Office, ODCTE, for all prospective teachers before any application can be processed. The state staff will determine whether the prospective teacher is able to qualify for a teaching certificate.
2. Applicants for the license/certificate in this program must receive a recommendation from the State Program Manager in addition to the recommendation from an institution approved to offer a Standard Certificate in Health Careers Education.
3. Provisional I Certificate qualifications are similar to the Trade and Industrial Education certification procedures mentioned above, for both degreed and non-degreed applicants. Provisional I Certificates may be successively reissued upon satisfactory completion of not less than six (6) semester hours of credit toward standard certification including the basic Health Careers Education courses during the one-year term of validity. All Provisional 1 requirements should be completed within five years.
4. All applicants must submit to an FBI fingerprint check and an OSBI background check – fee is $41.00 – casher’s check or money order ONLY made out to the OSBI. Fingerprint packets are available from the Oklahoma State Department of Education, Professional Standards Division – Room 211, 2500 North Lincoln Boulevard, Oklahoma City, OK 73105-4599.
5. Certification is only necessary in secondary classrooms or classrooms where even 1 secondary student is present. Adult instructors do not need a teaching certificate. Minimum qualifications to teach are an Associates degree and licensure in your field. Associates + 15 recommended, Bachelors preferred. Degree requirements same for both adult and secondary instructors.
