To the Teacher:

One of the most important aspects of the residency program is the observation.  Although many new teachers fear the “dreaded observation”, its purpose is to actually identify the strengths and limitations of the teacher.  The observer will alert you to when your observation will occur and usually will conduct a pre-conference to discuss what the focus of the observation.  This will be your opportunity to discuss your concern(s) and get observation feedback directly related to your needs.

Your induction team will consist of 3 members besides yourself.  Each of these team members are required to observe the beginning teacher three times, totaling nine observations.  It is important that the new teacher realize that these nine observations are all directed to assisting the new teacher to become stronger.

You will receive feedback immediately after each observation and at your second and third official team meeting.  Your observer will identify your strengths, any concerns, and also give you ideas and recommendations.  This is a wonderful opportunity to “pick the brain” of your observer and to be very candid about the difficulties you may be experiencing.

Remember that the focus of the observation is to improve your instruction.  No one on your team expects perfection.  If this was an expectation the residency/induction program would never have been initiated
