The New Teacher Induction Process:

Each new career-tech teacher is assigned to a team consisting of a local administrator, a local site mentor and a higher education representative. The team is dedicated to assisting the beginning teacher.

Each beginning teacher will complete a needs assessment survey, usually administered at the New Teacher Institute, based upon 13 “Master Teacher” duties*. These duties have been validated and cross-walked by Oklahoma’s Master Teachers to the Criteria for Effective Teaching and to the latest reform studies in education, such as School-to-Work, High Schools That Work, National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and ISTE Foundation Standards in Technology. Using the needs assessment survey along with input from the new teacher and other team members a plan is specially tailored for the new teacher. This plan will identify immediate teacher needs, begin to develop tools to address these needs, and sequence future college coursework. Some of the products that result from these efforts may eventually be “banked” to fulfill elements of T&I course assignments.

Provisional Teaching Certificate Requirements

The requirement to advance from a Provisional Level I Teaching Certificate (where most new T&I teachers start) to Provisional Level II requires a total of 48 credits. At the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) these credits are earned by completing the occupational competency (commonly referred to as NOCTI) for 24 credit hours, 17 hours of T&I specific coursework (often called the Basic 17), and 7 hours of General Education requirements (courses like math, English, history, etc.).

Courses and coursework

UCO has a long-standing history of offering courses at convenient times for its students. All T&I basics are offered through various methods:

·        Interactive television that can be received at many sites including community colleges,
careertech centers, and local comprehensive high schools

·        Weekend classes (students meet for one weekend – Friday evenings and all day
        Saturday- per credit hour)

·        Week-long summer block classes

·        Web-CT classes in which students meet periodically (usually three class meetings per
semester) at UCO or other (depending upon participants’ locations)

Courses are scheduled to enable students to complete all of the Basic 17 within three regular fall/spring semesters or over three consecutive summers, or from a combination of regular and summer semesters. Other professional education course requirements also offer creative delivery methods.
