CAREER CONNECTION- (JOB SHADOWING)
Overview: TSA participants are required to turn in a portfolio
containing a written report based on their experience and completed job
shadowing forms based on the business shadowed. The student’s portfolio will be evaluated and the top 20
finalists will be interviewed with questions covering their job shadowing
material and experience.
I. PURPOSE
The
purpose of the contest is to provide documentation of research and work
experience in which students learn about a job by shadowing the workday of a
qualified employee. This experience
will help affirm a career direction and motivate students to work toward their
career goal.
II. ELIGIBILITY FOR ENTRY
Entries
are limited to three per chapter.
lll. TIME LIMITATIONS
Each participant must check in a portfolio at
a time specified in the state conference program. When the judging is completed, the 20 finalists will be posted. Finalists will sign up for an interview
(three to five minutes in length) as scheduled and published in the conference
program. Contest material may be picked
up at the time specified in the conference program.
IV. SPECIFIC REGULATIONS
A.

B. The content of the student’s
portfolio will vary according to each individual
student’s educational/shadowing experiences.
It may contain
pictures of the job shadowing experience.
C. The student’s written report should
contain documentation of the career
occupation and evidence of research of the selected business
and
job shadowing experience. The typed
written report should not
exceed
two pages in length.
D. A resume should
contain the following information:
personal data, objectives,
education, work experience, awards and achievements.
E. Job
Application – Should contain correct spelling, proper sentence structure, and
printed in blue or black pen.

I. Verification
of Student Attendance form (Job Shadowing Guide - Form 4, page 19) form will be
completed by the host business.
J. Job Site
Interview form (Job Shadowing Guide - Form 5, page 20-21) should
be completed by the student.
K. Job
Shadowing Observation form (Job Shadowing Guide - Form 6, pages
22, 23, 24) should be completed by the student.
L. Examples of the portfolio material may
include but not limited to:
1. three ring binder
2. clear report covers
3. sheet protectors
4. flip chart folders – 8 1/2 by 11
V. PROCEDURE
A. Event participants must
register for the event in accordance with procedures
established in the state conference booklet.
B. Participants
must check-in event material at the time printed in the program. Anyone reporting, whose name is not on the
official entry
list,
shall not be allowed to participate until official notification is
received
from the coordinator of the event.
C. The event coordinator will secure the entries in the area
designated.
D. The event
coordinator will distribute the event evaluator’s materials.
E. The event coordinator will review the event limitations,
regulations,
and
procedures with the event judges to clarify any questions or misunderstanding.
F. Event
judges will evaluate the entries, tally and turn in the rating forms
to the event coordinators to determine the top ten participants
for
the interviews.
G. After judging the interviews, the event judges and event
coordinator
will
break any ties and identify the ranking of the 10 finalists.
