COSMETOLOGY
Cosmetology is the art and science of beauty care and involves care of the skin, hair,
nails, and scalp. To provide these services to the public, people have successfully
completed the written and practical examination given by the State Board of Cosmetology in
Oklahoma City. Several terms are used to describe these persons -licensed cosmetologist,
hairstylist, operator, and hairdresser. Career options for licensed cosmetologists can
vary widely. For example, with a cosmetology license, actual work experience, and
additional training, a person can work as a manicurist, sculptured nail technician,
esthetician, research technician for a cosmetics manufacturer, salon owner, consultant,
haircutter, men's hairstylist, makeup artist, color technician, or shampooer.
Cosmetology programs are available in selected high schools, Technology
Centers,
and privately-owned schools. All cosmetology programs require that students wear uniforms
while in class. High school students must be 16 years old before November 1 of his/her
junior year. Students also register with the State Board of Cosmetology which requires a
fee and a copy of the student's birth certificate. Most students are expected to purchase
a kit which includes equipment they use while in training.
The State Board of Cosmetology requires a minimum of 1500 hours of instruction for basic
operator, 600 hours for facial technician, and 600 hours for nail technician. Students
learn the information and practice skills related to shampooing, hairstyling, permanent
waving, hair coloring/tinting, manicuring/pedicuring, facials and facial makeup. A
cosmetologist must also know about bacteriology, anatomy, and physiology as they relate to
the care of the skin, hair, scalp, and nails. Cosmetology students also study chemistry as
it relates to cosmetics and hair care products. They learn about selling in the beauty
salon as well as good business procedures needed to earn a living in beauty care
positions. A high school student can complete the hour requirement in two years; 500 hours
of related high school subjects can be applied to the minimum requirement of 1500 hours.
An adult student enrolled full-time can complete the 1500 hours in approximately one year.
