COMPUTER REPAIR AND NETWORKING
The Computer Repair and Networking Technician is responsible for the installation,
setup, troubleshooting and repair of microcomputer systems, common peripherals, and
network systems in a field environment and possibly serves in a support role for
microcomputer end-users. Repair seldom requires work at the component level or soldering,
but relies heavily on logical and systematic troubleshooting skills and skill in working
with the public and co-workers.
Instruction in this program will include information on safety, employment opportunities,
terminology, materials, supplies, and the nature and use of tools and equipment, including
information on regulations and installation codes related to microcomputer systems and
peripherals, specific instruction on the theory, operation and troubleshooting of
microprocessors, bus systems, digital integrated circuits, microcomputer hardware,
operating systems, common user applications, network systems, and various common
peripherals. Instruction will also include the use of specialized diagnostic software and
equipment, system documentation and schematics.
Instruction will focus on system assembly, troubleshooting to the module level,
application installation, network software installation and administration, cabling and
network architecture, as well as developing resourcefulness and critical thinking skills
adequate to work effectively with little or no direct supervision.
Fifty percent or more time is devoted to hands-on experience.
Employment opportunities exist with agencies and firms using or specializing in the sales
and repair of office equipment and consumer products, or the telecommunications industry.
