TELECOMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGYThe primary responsibility of the Telecommunications Technician is the installation, maintenance, and repair of various components of telecommunications systems, including copper (UTP, coax) fiber optic, and wireless communication channels, microcomputer networks, interfaces, and multiplexing equipment. The technician has an understanding of electronic concepts, programming skills for common telecommunications equipment, and the fundamentals of digital and voice communications techniques, resourcefulness, and critical thinking skills adequate to work effectively under field conditions with little or no direct supervision, can use documentation, common test and diagnostic equipment to locate and correct faults in various electronic communication equipment, and has the interpersonal skills necessary to work with end users. Instruction in this program will include technical information on electronic and telecommunications safety and terminology, maintenance and use of hand and power tools, wire termination, basic direct current, and digital devices and circuits, microprocessors, and regulations and installation codes related to the telecommunications industry. Students will also be encouraged to develop critical thinking skills, leadership abilities, teamwork skills, quality workmanship concepts, and information on employment opportunities and job seeking and keeping skills. Sixty percent or more time is devoted to hands-on experience. Employment opportunities exist with the local telephone exchange carriers, long distance providers, the broadcast industry, cable service providers, mobile radio and telephone installers and services, utilities, government agencies, and large users of private communications systems.
