Overview

A summary of CareerTech activities and responsibilities in protecting the civil rights of individuals ensuring that access to educational opportunities are available to all persons without regard to race, color, national origin, sex or disability.

Five laws enacted by Congress address the rights of individuals to receive the benefits of public educational opportunities in the United States. Federal regulations are adopted by the executive branch to provide guidance in enforcing the laws. The laws are listed below with the corresponding implementing regulations:

  • Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 42 U.S.C. 2000d, implemented by 34 CFR Part 100
  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, 29 U.S.C. 794, implemented by 34 CFR Part 104
  • Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, 20 U.S.C. 1681, implemented by 34 CFR Part 106
  • Age Discrimination Act of 1975, 42 U.S.C. 6101-6103, implemented by 34 CFR 110
  • Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, 42 U.S.C. 12132, implemented by 28 CFR Part 35
