Ag Power and Technology
This is a one-credit course that builds upon the Introduction to Agricultural Mechanics and Power course. It is for students who wish to develop knowledge and skill in tractors, implements, engines, and related technologies. Major content includes meaning and use of agricultural power; personal and occupational safety; kinds, uses, and maintenance of agricultural tractors; kinds and uses of crop production equipment (including tillage, planting, application, and harvesting equipment); internal combustion engine principles and maintenance, including those using gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuels; tractor power trains; electronics, including sensors, controllers, and onboard computers; and electric motors. FFA and supervised experience will also be included as appropriate.

Introduction to Agriscience

Unit APT1: The nature of agricultural
power and technology (7 hours)

Benchmark APT1-1: Students will discuss
the meaning and scope of agricultural power and technology.

Benchmark APT1-2: Students will
describe the impact of agricultural power and technology on the agricultural
industry, including production agriculture, horticulture, and forestry..

Benchmark APT1-3: Students will apply
mathematics and physical science in agricultural power and technology work,
including simple machines, power, and work.

Unit APT2: Career entry and advancement
in the agricultural power and technology (5 hours)

Benchmark APT2-1: Students will
identify occupations in agricultural power and technology and list competencies
needed for occupational entry.

Benchmark APT2-2: Students will name
and describe important personal skills for success in agricultural power and
technology careers.

Unit APT3: Personal and occupational
safety in agricultural power and technology (7 hours)

Benchmark APT3-1: Students will assess
personal and occupational safety situations in agricultural power and
technology work and choose appropriate safety practices.

Benchmark APT3-2: Students will
properly select, use, and maintain personal protective equipment when working
in agricultural power and technology.

Benchmark APT3-3: Students will
demonstrate proper selection and use of hand tools used in agricultural power
and technology work.

Benchmark APT3-4: Students will
demonstrate appropriate operation and safety skills with power tools, tractors,
and equipment before use.

Unit APT4: Tractors (24 hours)

Benchmark APT4-1: Students will
classify tractors as wheeled, crawler, and belted; as tricycle and wide front;
by fuel type; and by kind of hitch and list the advantages and disadvantages of

and demonstrate general tractor operation skills, including engine operation
and safety.

Benchmark APT4-3: Students will
demonstrate preventive maintenance skills, including the intake and exhaust
systems, fuel system, lubrication, cooling system, and tires.

trouble shooting and demonstrate how it is carried out.

records kept on tractors and explain why such records are important.

Unit APT5: Equipment used in the
agricultural industry (12 hours)

Benchmark APT5-1: Students will
identify and discuss the use of common equipment used in agriculture,
horticulture, and forestry and classify such equipment as self-propelled or

describe the operation and maintenance of primary and secondary tillage

identify planting equipment and describe its operation and maintenance.

Unit APT6: Internal combustion engines
(29 hours)

Benchmark APT6-1: Students will
classify internal combustion engines based on the kind of fuel used and list
advantages and disadvantages of each.

Benchmark APT6-2: Students will explain
the general operation of an internal combustion engine, including four-stroke
cycle, two-stroke cycle, and diesel fuel engines.

Benchmark APT6-3: Students will
identify the major components of an internal combustion engine and explain
functions of each component.

Benchmark APT6-4: Students will explain
concepts of energy power and efficiency and describe how such are measured.

Benchmark APT6-5: Students will perform
diagnostic tests on engines using electronic and computer system diagnostics.

Benchmark APT6-6: Students will perform
ignition and compression diagnostic tests on small engines.

Benchmark APT6-7: Students will perform
preventive maintenance service jobs on small engines, including servicing the
air filter and engine oil replacement.

Benchmark APT6-8: Students will
disassemble and reassemble a small engine following proper procedures and
demonstrate that the engine will start.

Benchmark APT6-9: Students will clean,
evaluate, and recondition small engine components as needed.

Benchmark APT6-10: Students will
identify diesel engine fuel system components and explain the functions of each.

Benchmark APT6-11: Students will test
the injection system of a diesel engine, including assessing an injector nozzle
for spray pattern, opening pressure, and valve leakage.

Unit APT7: Hydraulics (9 hours)

Benchmark APT7-1: Students will explain
the meaning and operation of hydraulic systems.

Benchmark APT7-2: Students will
identify the major components of hydraulic systems.

Benchmark APT7-3: Students will
demonstrate preventive maintenance of hydraulic systems.

Unit APT8: Power trains (9 hours)

Benchmark APT8-1: Students will explain
the functions of a power train and identify major components of power trains.

Benchmark APT8-2: Students will
demonstrate the proper maintenance and service of power trains, including
transmissions, differential, and final drives.

Unit APT9: Precision technology (11

Benchmark APT9-1: Students will explain
the meaning and use of precision technology in agriculture.

Benchmark APT9-2: Students will explain
the meaning and use of variable rate technology in agriculture.

the components of a variable rate system and describe the role of each
