Advanced Biological Laboratory Skills

This course provides the student with an opportunity for further training in advanced techniques utilized in biological laboratories. Students are expected to demonstrate initiative and the ability to work independently, the ability to analyze and follow protocols with minimal supervision, critical thinking skills, and the ability to recognize potential errors in their laboratory procedures based upon their laboratory results. Curriculum topics may include, but are not limited to: advanced training in mixing and standardizing solutions; assay development; manipulation and analysis of nucleic acids, programming and use of thermal cyclers for PCR reactions, and utilization of real time PCR; Southern and Western blotting techniques; application of recombinant DNA technology; protein production, extraction, and analysis; applications of ELISA and immunology; plant biotechnology and pharmaceuticals; maintenance of animal cell lines; and water and wastewater management. Curriculum topics may be dictated by local industry needs, student interests, and/or current curriculum and laboratory resources.
