Biological Laboratory Sciences Orientation
This course serves as an orientation to fundamental laboratory skills and knowledge used in a variety of biotechnology laboratory careers and training facility policies and requirements. Students will be expected to adhere to professional expectations of behavior and dress on a daily basis, and participate in the Career Tech Student Organization Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA). Through participation in HOSA and other opportunities each student will participate in community outreach/awareness and field experiences within the biotechnology career. Students will also demonstrate a working knowledge of common labware as well as quality assurance procedures.

A. Comply with Training Facility Administrative Policies and Requirements

1. Complete and turn in forms pertaining to enrollment.
2. Comply with training facility rules and policies.
3. Explain the grading criteria utilized.
4. Identify and maintain assigned personal inventory within the laboratory setting..
5. Participate in facility's Student Personnel Organization.
6. Describe various career majors within the biotechnology research and development pathway emphasized by the training facility and prevalent in Oklahoma.

B. Participate in Career Field Experiences and Community Outreach/Awareness

1. Participate in field experiences and discussions during field experiences and career exploration.
2. Demonstrate creativity and resourcefulness in the development and implementation of activities that serve to educate community members and peers about biotechnology careers and the training facility.
3. Model professional behavior and dress and actively participate in discussions when hosting guest speakers in the classroom.

C. Participate in Career Tech Student Organizations (CTSO)

1. Participate in activities of the class chapter of the appropriate CTSO.
2. When the opportunity is provided demonstrate leadership characteristics as a class officer.
3. Identify a CTSO competitive event of interest and fulfill the qualifications required for participation.

D. Comprehend and Model Essential Housekeeping Functions

1. Demonstrate proper dish washing technique for chemical glassware.
2. List and be prepared to discuss the errors and hazards that may be caused by unclean glassware.
3. Model and explain the steps to perform the essential housekeeping functions necessary to assure a contamination-free lab environment according to SOPs (standard operating procedures).
4. Describe and model the disposal of laboratory clean-up materials and tools.
5. Identify the different types of detergents/cleaners and their uses.
6. Describe the appropriate appearance of the laboratory and status of equipment before exiting each day.
7. Model appropriate documentation of daily housekeeping functions performed.

E. Identify and Model Care and Use of Common Laboratory Glassware and Utensils.

1. Locate, identify and correctly label/spell the common glassware and metal utensils used in the laboratory on a daily basis.
2. Locate the storage areas for all common glassware and metal utensils.
3. Set-up and describe the use of common laboratory glassware and utensils including the abbreviated measurements on each piece of labware.
4. Model sterilization of labware and utensils.
5. Model proper disposal of broken glassware.
