The student will receive an overview of the Medical Assistant career. An emphasis will be placed on professionalism, history of the profession, human relations, OSHA guidelines, medical asepsis, vital signs, routine medical office procedures, emergency procedures, law, ethics, communication and documentation.

-Explain the role of the professional medical assistant (MA) and describe the qualities of a professional medical assistant.

-Explain various aspects of the history of medicine.

-Explain the importance of the regulations and guidelines set forth by the federal government and the importance of universal
precautions.

-Demonstrate methods of medical asepsis and disease and infection control.

-Recognize, prepare and respond to an emergency in the medical office.

-Apply ethical concepts to a variety of health care settings.

-Explain stress and stressors including ways to cope with stress in the medical office setting.

-Explain the role of the MA in the area of medical laws.

-Recognize and utilize effective therapeutic communication skills in the medical office.

-Take a medical history using a medical history form as a guideline, being sensitive to the needs of the patient.

-Obtain vital signs, height and weight measurements.

-Teach the role of nutrition in maintaining health and encourage patients to adopt a healthy manner of living.

-Assist with and/or perform body system examinations and appropriate clinical procedures for the digestive system.

-Assist with and/or perform body system examinations and appropriate clinical procedures for the sensory system.

-Assist with and/or perform body system examinations and appropriate clinical procedures for the neurological system.

-Assist with and/or perform body system examinations and appropriate clinical procedures for the musculoskeletal system.

-Safely care for patients who have suffered injuries, such as fractures or severe back pain and/or patients who have debilitating illnesses.
